Welcome to History Class
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
Nelson Mandela
The study of history represents more than simply a knowledge of previous events as they have transpired. Students in my classes will experience an integrated study of the social sciences and humanities. In addition to history students will examine economics, geography, law, philosophy, political science and sociology. These are essential aspects in the understanding of our country, as well as that of other cultures. Through these courses, we will begin to understand and appreciate the varying forces that either hold a society together or pull it apart. Furthermore, students will develop historical skills such as corroboration, contextualization, and investigation that will benefit them in all walks of life as they progress outside of high school.
By developing a concern for the common good, we can begin to internalize a vested interest in identifying, understanding and working to solve the problems that face all cultures. Moreover, we must come to realize that many of the issues facing us as
individuals and small groups have much broader connections within a larger context. Only by realizing that the past informs the present can we better appreciate the issues facing our diverse nation and increasingly interdependent world.
